Goals Department of Civil Engineering:
The Civil Engineering Bachelor (Hons) program prepares students with knowledge and skills in Building Construction, Transportation, Geotechnic, and Water Engineering;
The specific goals of the Civil Engineering Course are:
1. To prepare students to gain knowledge, skills and creative attitudes to plan, design, analyse, implement, and control & supervise in the area of Geotechnic, Building Construction, Transportation, and Water Engineering;;
2.To achieve the knowledge and skills, the students learn a combination of Mathematics, Engineering, Science and Management-based practices based on proven theoretical, practical and industrial approaches;
3. To prepare students with effective communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and a sensitivity to gender issue; and
Objectives Department of Civil Engineering:
The Civil Engineeringl graduates are expect to be able to:
1. Enter the construction industry and advance toward leadership positions in the construction industry;
2. Work on multi-disciplinary teams and effectively communicate with constructors, architects, engineers, the public and public agents, scientists and others to completeconstruction projects;
3. Engage in the life-long learning necessary to advance professionally in the construction Field;
4. Contribute to society and the construction industry through involvement in professionalrelated and/or other service activity;
5. Conduct their affairs in a highly ethical manner holding paramount the safety, health andwelfare of the public and striving to comply with the principles of sustainable Development;
6. Some graduates can expect to be able to planning, designing, analysing, implementation, control & supervise related with the Civil Engineering issues;
7. Enter the surveying profession and become licensed to practice surveying;
8. Earn a Master of Civil Engineering programdegree from DIT or othergraduate Colleges;
Learning Outcomes and Competencies:
The following describes the Civil Engineering program outcomes and their related assessment process as follows (Knowledge) :
1. Understand theories and practices of building construction, transportation, geotechnic, and water engineering. To achieve this, the course subjects include To achieve this, the course subjects include calculus, physics engineering, chemistry, mathematics;
2. Understandand use effectivecommunication, to implement entrepreneurship and citizenship.Therefore, the course subjects include English, tetun, portugues languages, and communication skills;
3. Understand computer concepts and applications. Course subjects include engineering drawing & Graphic Engineering Design, structure analysis program, ETABS;
4. Understand Timor-Leste’s constitution, globalization, gender, and good citizenship. Subjects include constitution, and citizenship, gender, and development;
The skills expected for graduates to adquire are:
1. Ability to plan, design, analyse, building construction (structur, transportation, water and geotechnic);
2. Ability to plan, implement and supervise transporation, construction, development and management;;
3. Ability to plan, design, analyse, implement and supervise geotechnic activities and projects. At the end of the second year our students are able to undertake construction design and implement projects as requested by companies or individuals;
4. Ability to transfering skills and problem solving in Civil Engineering related issues;
5. Ability to communicate effectively, to define and to sucessfully resolve civil engineering projects and related issues.;
Students will demonstrate personal, social and ethical responsibility as a part of lifelong learning through:
1. Personal responsibility.Students will uphold persoanll responsibility towards him/herself and the community and criticaly identify interdisciplinary issues and provide relevant and effective problem-solving strategies in civil engineering;
2. Ethical & social responsibility. Students will employ effective communication strategies, to adopt professional, social and ethical responsibility; To achieve this, the course subjects include, critical Thingking and Problem solving and ethics and work safety;
3. Active in social & civic engagement.Students will have strong commitment to the development of science and technology in civil engineering for the benefit of the community and indeed the entire nation; To achieve this, the course subjects include; practical industrial training;
4. Respect for diverse culture.Students will demonstrate the ability to work in teams, including a multi-cultural working environment, and to deliver work on time; To achieve this, the course subjects include critical and problem solving, entrepreneurship, research methods;
5. Lifelong learning.Students will apply creative and innovative ability to find new ideas, skills and solutions to the social, economic and security issues which may arise in civil engineering. To achieve this, the course subjects include project management. Since 2015 every year civil engineering students take inisiative to build a house to the most needed families. In 2015 a house was built in Fatuahi for a poor family costing around$7000; In 2016 a second house was build for a widow in Gleno Ermera District costingaround $ 7000; the thirdhouse is still in progress in Liquica District with the same cost of $ 7000. All these money were collected from students, staff of DIT. On top of that students also built twenty (20) trash bin for the community around Diliduring the years of 2013 and 2014 with the cost around $ 6000. Inside Campusstudents also built the CampusWall fence around DIT Campus and parking for staff DIT ;
